PLUS: Executive orders, third parties, and D-Day
Good morning! Don’t laugh, this is a very serious issue. Last September, a well-meaning American donor connected a remote Amazonian tribe to the internet via satellite. The service was initially used to call for medical help with snake bites. Fast forward nine months… and all the young people are addicted to social media and porn. Said one tribal elder, “They’re learning the ways of the white people.”

✒️ Biden signs order halting some border crossings

President Biden at the U.S.-Mexico border last year (White House photo)
President Biden signed an executive order preventing more asylum claims at the southern border. Technically this only kicks in when we hit 2,500 illegal entries per day. But we're well past that already — we're at about 4,000 — so it kicks in immediately.
As opposed to signing a law passed by Congress, this is basically Biden using his management superpowers (and powers given to him by older laws).
What's it do? Asylum seekers come to the border asking for protection from some sort of persecution (or economic problem) back home. They're often allowed to stay while their claim is processed. This axes that.
It forces border officials to turn back all but the most legitimate asylum seekers. Unaccompanied minors will also stay.
Border officials will (allegedly try to) expel migrants who cross illegally. Those expelled will get hit with five-year bans from the U.S. Mexico agreed to accept many of them.
The U.S. will yank American visas from officials from countries that help facilitate these illegal entries.
What's Congress think? Many Democrats celebrated the president's decision as necessary after Congress nixed a Biden-backed immigration bill earlier this year for being too weak. More progressive Dems, however, aren't big fans. They say it doesn't offer enough protection for "undocumented folks" already here.
Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell compared it to "turning a garden hose on a five-alarm fire." Others said Biden caused this crisis in the first place by relaxing Trump-era border restrictions.
Donald Trump said Biden is "for amnesty, not border security." His campaign claimed this policy will "facilitate the release of more illegals."
Future: The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced a lawsuit aiming to stop the order, which it says is illegal.
A big majority of voters say immigration is super important. And they trust Trump over Biden on it by a 17% margin. So doing (or appearing to do) something is a political necessity for Biden.
Elsewhere:
The House passed (247 to 155) a mostly symbolic bill to penalize the International Criminal Court (ICC) for charging Israeli political leadership with war crimes.
The House held angry hearings with Attorney General Merrick Garland and Dr. Anthony Fauci (former presidential COVID advisor).
A nonbinding fun-sucking advisory committee at the FDA recommended against legalizing molly as a treatment for PTSD.
POLITICS

C-SPAN should consider hiring this kid full-time to boost ratings.
🔴 Puerto Rico’s non-voting delegate to Congress, Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón (R), won her party’s nomination for governor of Puerto Rico. Unlike every other member of Congress — including those from other territories like Guam — Puerto Rico’s non-voting representative resident commissioner serves a four-year term. Because why make things simple when they can be difficult instead?
🔵 U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican City), former Sen. Joe Donnelly, will resign his post on July 8 and return home to Indiana. The timing of the resignation is raising questions about whether Donnelly plans to parachute into the Indiana governor’s race. The Republican nominee, Sen. Mike Braun, just so happens to be the guy who booted Donnelly from the U.S. Senate back in 2018.
🟢 Dr. Jill Stein will be the presidential nominee of the environmentalist Green Party for the third time. If history is any guide, she won’t be a major force in the race. In 2012, she won 0.36% of the national vote. Her support in 2016 tripled to 1.07%.
🟡 Activist Chase Oliver won the presidential nomination of the Libertarian Party. Other recent Libertarian presidential nominees won 3.3% and 1.2% of the vote. However, that more successful candidate was a former Republican governor of New Mexico, while Oliver is just… some dude.
TRIVIA
Feared by managers everywhere, there’s an ethnic group in Myanmar called the Karen people. But this country in Southeast Asia, currently embroiled in a long-running civil war, hasn’t always been called Myanmar. Its name was changed in 1989 by the military-run dictatorship. What is the original name of Myanmar?
Hint: Myanmar lends its OG name to a species of python.
WORLD
🇫🇷 France: Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy 80 years ago tomorrow. This is likely the last major anniversary of the D-Day landings with living veterans (they average 100 years old). It's an event the liberated people of France are taking quite seriously.
🇮🇳 India: The world's largest democracy just completed history's largest election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his right-wing party will hang on to power. But, having won only a plurality of legislative seats, they'll need help from allied minor parties to govern.
🇲🇽 Mexico: Mexican voters elected left-wing populist Claudia Sheinbaum as their country's next president. The favored successor of the current president, she'll be both the first female and the first Jewish person to hold the office. Her six-year term begins October 1.
🇵🇰 Pakistan: A court acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan of leaking state secrets. But he remains imprisoned and charged with "un-Islamic marriage." At issue is (get ready) whether his wife saw a full three menstrual cycles pass between her divorce and her marriage to Khan.

SNACKS
🍿 Star Wars: The new “Star Wars” show, called “The Acolyte,” debuted last night on Disney+. Set 100 years before “Episode I,” reviews are shockingly good.
💰 Paramount: Skydance Media is poised to buy failing rival Paramount Global. This deal, unlike Sony’s recent bid, will not sell the company for parts.
🍺 Ten-Cent Beer Night: This legendary MLB disaster turned 50 last night. As you might imagine, getting 25,000 people blasted almost for free went… poorly. If you haven’t heard the story, give it a listen.
ANSWER
We’re looking for Burma — the name the nation’s dissidents still use. Unfortunately for sellers of Escalades and Stanley Cups, the Karens are a minority group in Burma. The majority ethnic group (and the snake) are the Burmese.
