PLUS: A TikTok update, peeing in the pool, and Harris makes it official
Good morning! The viral astrology girlie who predicted the date Biden would drop out now says Trump will win in November. But — and this is key — he'll also see some "unpredictability" since “Uranus is on his mid-heaven."
On the policy side, President Biden will unveil a plan today to reform the Supreme Court. Changes likely include term limits, an ethics code, and more. Considering this would require a constitutional amendment, we'll put its chances of passing somewhere near 0%. But it kick-starts a conversation many Democrats want to have.
WORLD
⚔️ China and India party like it’s 1490
The race is on for space-based weapons. But not every modern conflict uses high-tech weaponry. Some don't even use guns. If you've ever wondered what a modern war would look like without guns or bombs, look no further: India's battling China with… tridents?
Borders are iffy, unsettled things in many parts of the world. India and China have been fighting over just what exactly constitutes "India" and "China" since 1962 as part of the Sino-Indian border dispute. Hundreds of soldiers have been killed in small skirmishes over the years.
If you zoom in on northwestern India on Google Maps, you'll notice something peculiar: dashed lines as borders. That’s disputed territory (and here’s a CIA map of the area).
The U.S. and Canada have a few small border disagreements, too. But Canadians are nice and the maple syrup keeps ‘em docile, so it works out.
Line of Actual Control: They agreed in 1996 on establishing a Line of Actual Control to ward off a larger, possibly nuclear war. Part of the rules? No guns. No bombs. They’ve since realized that this doesn’t prevent fighting. It only changes the fighting that’s done.
Leaked videos from 2020 and 2021 show Indian and Chinese soldiers whacking each other with big sticks and yeeting rocks at the other side.
The dispute has driven thousands of semi-nomadic goat and yak herders out of their grazing lands.
Medieval weapons: What’s an army to do if it can’t carry guns? Go melee, of course. No, this isn’t a Netflix zombie movie. These are some of the weapons being used in the year of our Lord, 2024:
Clubs embedded with nails and barbed wire
Maces
Shields (gets you a solid +2 to defense)
Literal electro-shocking spiked tridents that would make Aquaman jealous
This is extremely cold, mountainous Himalayan terrain. It's difficult to fight in, which makes large shifts in physical control unlikely.
Future: Relations between the world's two most populous countries are icy at best. Deadly fights still break out occasionally. And China’s building up a military presence nearby. But they're working on it. They agreed last week to resolve at least part of this dispute with "urgency."
And here’s a quick look at some other, American news:
🤖 The Federal Communications Commission wants to force political ads to disclose any use of AI on broadcast TV or radio.
⚖️ The Department of Justice claimed TikTok stores U.S. user data in China as part of its legal fight to ban the app.
🔥 The Park Fire, Northern California's massive wildfire, is just barely contained and has swallowed up an area the size of Los Angeles in only three days. Police arrested a man on suspicion of intentional arson for starting the blaze.
POLITICS
Harris for President
🔵 Kamala Harris made it official on Friday, signing forms legally declaring her candidacy.
She raked in over $200 million in her first week as the presumptive Democratic nominee — and that’s on top of the pile of old Biden cash she inherited. But the Trump camp filed a legal complaint claiming her control of Biden’s war chest is illegal.
Harris voters in The Villages (aka God's waiting room), a super Republican area, went full "Florida retiree" and held a 200-golf-cart caravan supporting her candidacy.
Harris is reportedly looking for a "governing partner" rather than an "electoral boost" in her VP search, which is in its final stages.
🔴 Donald Trump’s ear is out and about, bandage-free. While that ear doesn't look as gnarly as you might expect, the FBI confirmed that he was hit by "a bullet, whether whole or fragmented."
Trump says he'll hold another rally in Butler, PA where he was shot on July 13.
Trump and Vance rallied in Minnesota on Saturday. The state hasn't voted Republican since 1972 (longer than any other), so Democrats say his push here is a head fake.
Trump is under fire from Democrats for backing off his commitment to a debate on September 10. They say he’s scared. He says he agreed to debate Biden and has to renegotiate the details with Harris.
⚪ The Bitcoin2024 conference in Nashville ended on Saturday. Donald Trump gave the keynote and pledged to create a "national Bitcoin stockpile." Talks for Kamala Harris to appear fell through, but the VP's office wants to meet with crypto companies to "reset" her rocky relationship with the industry. RFK Jr. also attended and, as one might expect, grabbed a pic with Hawk Tuah Girl.
⚪ Democrats allege Professor Cornel West’s left-wing independent presidential campaign is getting some illegal help from Republicans. Dems complained to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that Republicans are giving West some free help in his quest to get his name on the ballot in Arizona and North Carolina, two key swing states. They’re hoping he siphons off a few left-wing Harris voters.
🔵 Actor and Senate hopeful Hill Harper (D-MI), the guy your mom loved in “The Good Doctor,” pulled out of a Democratic primary debate with his opponent, Rep. Elissa Slotkin, after his last-minute debate-related demands weren’t met. Polls show Slotkin crushing Harper, 53% to 8%.
TRIVIA
A new book on the radioactive rizz of John F. Kennedy, Jr. says JFK's son once traded a $17 million Rolex for his school friend's camera lens. Because nothing says "rich" like trading away generational wealth like normal kids trade Pokemon cards. His sister Caroline, JFK’s only surviving child, serves in the Biden administration. Caroline Kennedy currently serves as U.S. ambassador to which Anglosphere country?
Hint: This country's right-wing political party is called the Liberal Party.
WORLD
🇮🇱 Israel: At least 12 people, some children, were killed by a rocket in the Golan Heights, a disputed area occupied by Israel. The area is home to the Druze, a small ethnic group who practice the Druze faith (an Abrahamic religion). Israel blames Hezbollah, but the Lebanese terror group has denied responsibility.
🇲🇽 Mexico: Mexican drug kingpin and Sinaloa cartel leader El Mayo's luck ran out. After decades of evading arrest, the 76-year-old ex-partner of El Chapo was arrested in El Paso, TX after being tricked into boarding a private plane by El Chapo's son.
🌍 Olympics: The Olympics are in full swing and things are happening. Dozens of medals have already been awarded. Jill Biden's in town watching water polo with Flavor Flav. Everyone's mad at France for an opening ceremony that offended Christians. They accidentally mixed up North and South Korea. The medals have iron from the Eiffel Tower in them. Canada cheated. The Seine is probably still poopy. Aaand the swimmers pee in the pool.

Caroline Kennedy has served as U.S. ambassador to Australia since 2022. She previously served as ambassador to Japan during Obama's second term.
Her younger brother, JFK, Jr., died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999. A new book on his life, "JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography" came out earlier this month on the 25th anniversary of his death.
